Margaret Sommeling, DAOM is a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, specializing in treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system ranging from degenerative changes related to aging to injuries sustained by professional and amateur athletes.
Dr. Sommeling has 20 years of clinical experience applying the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to a diverse population of patients in both private practice and as part of a comprehensive medical team of Western medical doctors, physician assistants, chiropractors, and physical therapists. Her eastern medical treatments encompass acupuncture, Chinese herbs, nutrition, cupping, and lifestyle change recommendations.
Dr. Sommeling is a graduate (2002) of the New England School of Acupuncture in Boston, MA where she earned her MS in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. She remained in Boston and continued her herbal studies apprenticing with renowned herbalist Dr. Tao Xie. At the conclusion of her studies, she opened a private practice in Northampton, MA serving the Pioneer Valley and surrounding areas of western Massachusetts. She was also a member of a team of acupuncturists at Plum Blossom Clinic in Cambridge, MA.
In 2011, she moved back to New Jersey where she was born and raised, to be closer to her family. She went on to achieve a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (2018) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego with an emphasis on Integrative Medicine. She is trained in AcuSport Medicine focusing on treating sports injuries and Oriental Medicine-Physical Medicine (OM-PM), a system of medicine combining traditional Chinese Medical diagnostics with physical medicine and orthopedic assessment. Dr. Sommeling is a diplomate of acupuncture and is nationally board certified by the National Commission for Certification in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She is an active member of the New Jersey Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She is licensed in both New Jersey and Massachusetts.
A former gymnast, Dr. Sommeling has always had a strong interest in the mechanics of the human body. From an early age, she intuitively understood the importance of the mind-body connection and continues to have a fascination with all forms of natural remedies. An avid reader and student, she enjoys educating herself on the most current and effective treatments in both eastern and western medicine. Her focus is to improve the quality of life for those in need and empowering patients to be active participants in their own healing. She practices at Northeast Spine & Sports Medicine’s Point Pleasant office.
