Shin pain in runners (Part I)
Not every pain in the shin is the same. Many runners who have shin pain may be suffering from something other than “shin splints.” In today’s post, we will investigate this particular diagnosis, however, stay tuned for future posts on other common and not so common causes of shin pain in runners.
A more accurate term to describe what is commonly known as “shin splints” is medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS).

A person with MTSS complains of a diffuse pain located along the inner border of the shin bone (tibia), which often improves after warm up.
One common risk for MTSS is Flat feet – also called excess pronation. This can be measured in the office by use of simple testing by our physical therapists or sports medicine physicians.
