Located in the south-central coastal portion of Ocean County lies Barnegat, a 33.62 square mile township with a population of a little over 20,000. This township is rich in history; in fact there is even a Historic District!
Here are a few facts we found interesting about Barnegat:
- In approximately 1690, Henry Hudson sailed along the coast of New Jersey and came to an inlet, which he named Barende-gat, a Dutch word meaning “an inlet with breakers”. The name later evolved into the present day spelling of Barnegat.
- The earliest settlers were the Lenape Indians who would leave their winter homes inland for the summer and venture to the shore to gather clams, roasting and drying them for the winter.
- The oldest building in Barnegat is The Quaker Meeting House built in 1767.
- In the early 1900′s Barnegat was the most popular place for people from surrounding areas to shop. The town thrived with businesses such as grocery stores, a bank, a dry good’s store, a butcher, a shoemaker, a bakery, blacksmiths, two doctors, a lumberyard and a coal yard.
