Meniscus Injuries

Dr. Dimitrios Lambrou Nov 03, 2015

What are menisci in the knee? These are a pair of complex tissue located between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia). This tissue is shaped like a letter “C”, and their purpose is to reduce the compressive load that the cartilage must endure.

In young people, sports (such as basketball, football, soccer and skiing ) are the most common cause of meniscal injuries.

Symptoms of injury include:

  • locking of the knee
  • swelling
  • pain along the joint line

Interestingly, different parts of the meniscus have varying amounts of blood supply. The outer portions have more blood supply so theoretically, healing is more likely to occur in these regions.   PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections are one of several methods that researchers are currently applying to meniscal injuries.
